Staircase to Dunagiri Temple

The Shakti Temple of Dunagiri at 8000 ft elevation is located in Almora district, 43 km from Ranikhet and close to Kukuchina. According to the local tradition, the area has been regularly visited by Rishi-Munis (sages) since ancient times. Dunagiri is mentioned in several Hindu Scriptures and has been bestowed the name of Brahm-parvat, Divine Mountain.
The ancient, sacred and highly spiritually charged Dunagiri Temple dedicated to the worship of Shakti, Divine Mother's principle, is believed by many to be a place Lahiri Mahasaya visited while he was staying in the area for his work, and that he and Babaji Maharaj met there.
The way from the road to the temple is a covered staircase of some 500 steps which winds its way nearly a kilometer up to the top of the ridge. The bells are hung the entire way.
